Terms of Service

Last updated 7 August 2026

These terms cover using Recka, in plain language. They explain your account, subscriptions, the content you create, and the usual legal points. Please read them.

1.Agreement

These Terms of Service ("Terms") are an agreement between you and Recka ("Recka", "we", "us") covering your use of the Recka desktop application, this website, and any related services (together, the "Service"). By downloading, creating an account, or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.

2.What Recka is

Recka is a local-first spaced-repetition study app. It runs on your device, schedules your reviews, and can optionally sync and back up your library to the cloud. Recka is under active development and parts of it may be offered in beta, which means features can change, and occasional issues are possible.

3.Your account

  • You need an account for cloud sync and for a paid subscription. You can use the app locally without one.
  • You must give accurate information and be old enough to form a binding contract where you live.
  • You are responsible for keeping your login details secure and for activity that happens under your account.
  • Tell us promptly if you believe your account has been accessed without your permission.

4.Subscriptions and billing

  • Recka offers a paid subscription (currently £4.99 per month) with a free trial period. Pricing and current plans are shown on our pricing page.
  • Payments are processed by Stripe. By subscribing you authorise us, through Stripe, to charge your chosen payment method.
  • Unless you cancel, your subscription renews automatically at the end of each billing period, and the then-current fee is charged.
  • You can cancel at any time from your account. Cancellation stops future renewals; you keep access until the end of the period you have already paid for.
  • If we change prices, we will give you reasonable notice, and any change applies to billing periods after the notice.

Except where required by law (including your statutory rights), payments are non-refundable. If you think you have been charged in error, contact us and we will look into it.

5.Free and beta access

We may offer the Service, or particular features, free of charge or as part of a beta. Free and beta access is provided as-is and we may change or withdraw it at any time. Beta features may be less stable than the rest of the app.

6.Your content

The decks, cards and other material you create are yours. You keep all rights to them. Recka does not claim ownership of your content.

To provide the Service (for example, to store, sync and back up your library when you enable sync), you grant us a limited licence to host and process your content solely for that purpose. You are responsible for the content you create and for having the right to use any material you import, including from other apps such as Anki.

7.Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service to break the law or infringe anyone else’s rights.
  • Attempt to disrupt, overload, reverse engineer, or gain unauthorised access to the Service or its systems, except to the extent this restriction is prohibited by law.
  • Resell or redistribute the Service without our permission.
  • Upload malicious code or content that is unlawful, harmful, or infringing.

8.Intellectual property

The Service itself, including the Recka name, software, design and content we provide, is owned by Recka or its licensors and is protected by intellectual property laws. These Terms do not give you any rights in the Service beyond the right to use it as described here.

9.Availability

Because Recka is local-first, the core app works offline. Cloud sync, accounts and billing depend on online services that we aim to keep available but do not guarantee will be uninterrupted or error-free. We may update, change or temporarily suspend parts of the Service, for example for maintenance.

10.No study or exam guarantee

Recka is a study tool. It can help you review effectively, but we do not guarantee any particular academic result, exam outcome, or level of memory retention. How you use it is up to you.

11.Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, to the fullest extent permitted by law. This does not exclude any warranties or rights that cannot be excluded under the law that applies to you.

12.Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Recka will not be liable for any indirect, incidental or consequential loss, or for loss of data, profits or goodwill, arising from your use of the Service. Our total liability to you for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us for it in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these Terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.

13.Backups

While we provide backup and sync features, you are responsible for keeping your own copies of anything important to you. We are not liable for any loss of content, though we will always do our best to help you recover it.

14.Termination

You can stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or end your access if you breach these Terms or use the Service in a way that could harm it or other users. If we end your access without cause while you have paid for a period, we will refund the unused portion.

15.Governing law

These Terms are governed by the laws of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction, unless the mandatory law of your country of residence gives you the right to bring a claim elsewhere.

16.Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email. If you keep using the Service after a change takes effect, you accept the updated Terms.
