If you've heard people talk about the best way to revise, the same two words keep coming up: spaced repetition. It sounds technical, but the idea is simple, and it's one of the most useful things you can understand before your GCSEs or A-levels. Here is spaced repetition explained without the jargon: what it actually is, why it works better than the way most people revise, and how to start using it this week.
What spaced repetition actually means
Spaced repetition means reviewing something several times, with growing gaps between each review, instead of learning it once or cramming it all at once.
So instead of reading your Biology notes five times the night before a test, you review the topic tomorrow, then a few days later, then a week later, then a couple of weeks after that. Each review is spaced further apart than the last. That spacing is the whole trick, and it's the opposite of what most students naturally do.
Why the gaps are the point
To see why spacing works, you need one fact about memory: you forget things on a curve.
When you learn something new, your ability to remember it drops fairly quickly over the next few days. That's normal, it happens to everyone, and it's why a topic you felt confident about on Sunday can feel blank by Thursday.
Here's the useful part. Every time you recall something just as you're starting to forget it, the memory comes back stronger and fades more slowly the next time. So:
- Review a fact one day after learning it, and it might hold for three or four days.
- Review it again then, and it might hold for a couple of weeks.
- Review it again, and it might hold for a month or more.
You're catching the memory right before it slips, giving it a nudge, and buying yourself a longer gap before the next review. Over a few weeks, something you'd normally forget completely becomes something you barely have to think about. That's why spaced repetition gets you better recall from less total revision, not more.
Why cramming feels good but doesn't last
Cramming is the opposite approach: all the reviews squashed into one long session right before the exam. It's popular because it works just well enough to scrape through the next morning, and because it feels productive to sit there for three hours.
The problem is that cramming loads everything into short-term memory, which empties fast. You might remember enough for a 9am exam, but two weeks later, when the next test builds on the same topic, it's gone. For GCSE and A-level, where later topics stack on earlier ones and you often sit several papers across a subject, cramming means relearning the same material again and again. Spacing means learning it once and keeping it.
Pair it with testing yourself, not re-reading
Spaced repetition is even more powerful when you combine it with the other well-evidenced revision habit: testing yourself instead of re-reading.
Re-reading your notes feels like revision, but it mostly builds familiarity, you recognise the words, which isn't the same as being able to write the answer in an exam with the page closed. Testing yourself (also called active recall) forces you to pull the answer out of your own head, which is exactly what the exam asks you to do.
So the strong version of spaced repetition isn't "re-read your notes on a schedule." It's "test yourself on a schedule." Close the book and try to recall the answer, then check. Space those tests out over time, and you're training the exact skill the exam tests, at the exact moments your memory needs it.
How to start this week (no app required)
You can do this with paper and a bit of organising:
- Turn your topics into questions. Flashcards are the classic tool: question on the front, answer on the back. Keep each card to one idea. A card asking "what are the stages of mitosis, the definition of osmosis, and three examples" is really three cards pretending to be one.
- Test, don't read. Look at the question, try to answer from memory, then flip to check. If you got it, that card can wait longer. If you didn't, it comes back sooner.
- Space the reviews. A simple system: cards you get right move to a "review in a few days" pile, cards you get wrong stay in a "review tomorrow" pile. The confident ones drift further and further apart.
- Follow your mistakes. The topics you keep getting wrong are where your revision time actually pays off. Don't keep re-testing the stuff you already know cold just because it feels nice.
Start small. Ten minutes of self-testing a day, spaced properly, beats a three-hour cram that you'll have forgotten by next week.
Where it gets fiddly by hand
The catch with doing spaced repetition on paper is the admin. Keeping track of which card is due for review, and when, across every subject, gets complicated fast. Miss a couple of days and your careful piles turn into one big "I have no idea what to review" heap. This is exactly the point where a lot of students give up and go back to cramming.
