- After reading a page, close it and write down everything you remember. Then reopen and check. The gaps are your revision list. This one change turns passive reading into active recall.
- Make flashcards, one idea per card. Question on the front, answer on the back. Every flip is a forced retrieval. Keep them tight: one card, one fact.
- Do past-paper questions early, not just at the end. Most students save past papers for the final week. Used from the start, they're retrieval practice in the exact format of the real exam.
- Explain a topic out loud as if teaching it. If you get stuck, you've found a gap. No stuck moments usually means you already knew it.
- Turn your highlighter off. If you must mark the page, mark the three things you'd struggle to recall, not everything that looks important.

Active recall gets even stronger when you spread it over time instead of doing it all at once. Test yourself on a topic today, then again in a few days, then a week later, with the gaps growing as you get more confident.
